Strawberry Rose Sweet Rolls

Strawberry Rose Sweet Rolls by Butter & Type

If you’re in need of some Galentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day inspiration, look no further than these Strawberry Rose Sweet Rolls! Every year, roses pop up at every grocery store, gas station, and drug store. And while I love flowers, I’ve never been one for red roses. This year, I’m getting my dose of roses with these sweet rolls (and a few bouquets of pinkish/peach roses). I know this is going to sound weird, but these Strawberry Rose Sweet Rolls have a sweet and comforting flavor. I try to be very light handed when I use rose extract in any of my recipes because it has a very strong and distinct taste. Balance is the key to using rose extract in any recipe. The strawberry jam and orange marmalade are sweet and have slightly floral undertones that perfectly complement the rose extract in the jam and rolls.

I love that sweet roll recipes always look good right out of the oven. I usually try to keep my decorating or finishing pretty minimal when I’m baking desserts. Give me a simple, humble presentation with amazing flavor any day of the week. I had a friend over when I was testing this recipe and she loved them, so just imagine what your friends or Valentine will think when you have them over for a special brunch! All you need is a mimosa bar, a fruit plate, and an easy frittata. At this point, I’ve basically planned your Galentine’s/Valentine’s brunch. You’re welcome.

P.S. If you like this recipe, then you’ll love my roundup of rose-flavored recipes next week. Check back for all the floral details!

    Sweet Rolls
  • 3 1/4 cups All-purpose Flour, divided
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 3/4 cup Whole Milk
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar
  • 10 tablespoons Unsalted Butter, cubed
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Bean Paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Rose Extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 2 large Eggs, beaten
  • Strawberry Rose Jam Filling
  • 3/4 cup Strawberry Jam
  • 3 tablespoons Orange Marmalade
  • 1/2 teaspoon Rose Extract
  • Glaze
  • 1 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Whole Milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon Vanilla Extract

  1. Sweet Rolls and Strawberry Rose Jam Filling
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, stir together 1 1/2 cups flour and yeast, set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, whisk together blood orange zest, milk, sugar, salt, butter, vanilla bean paste, and rose extract. Heat on medium low heat, being careful not to boil, until very warm (about 120-130 degrees) - the butter will be almost melted and should be very hot, but not burning, to the touch.
  4. Pour milk mixture and the beaten eggs over the flour in the stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Mix on medium speed until mixture is wet.
  5. Gradually add remaining 1 3/4 cup flour while mixer is on medium speed. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour if needed, the dough should be pulling away from the sides and the bowl should be almost clean. Keep the mixer on medium speed and knead for 8 minutes.
  6. Turn dough out into a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for one hour or until doubled. Punch dough down and roll out onto a floured surface into a large rectangle, about 9 x 12 inches.
  7. In a small, microwave-safe bowl, mix together the strawberry jam, orange marmalade, and rose extract. Heat for 30 seconds in the microwave and then mix to combine.
  8. Spread the strawberry rose jam filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/4" space around the edges.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  10. Roll up starting with the long side as tightly as possible and slice into 12-14 slices. Place slices cut side down in a 9 3/4" x 9 3/4" baking pan and allow to rise 30 minutes, covered and in a warm place.
  11. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Cool on a wire rack while making the glaze.
  13. Glaze and Assembly
  14. Add the powdered sugar, whole milk, and vanilla extract to a small bowl and whisk until smooth and fully combined.
  15. Drizzle over the tops of the sweet rolls, as desired.
